Silver Mist is a Vic Smeed design from the fifties based on a James Silver motor yacht. The size of the original plan was 21'' but I have enlarged the model to 36'', giving a scale of 1:16. The hull is built from 6mm birch ply frames with obeche blocks bow and stern with obeche planking in between. The inside of the hull is epoxied with ZPoxy.
The superstructure is from ply faced with sapele which I think gives a nice representation of mahogany. The decks are laid with parana pine with black card caulking. Drive is from an MFA 500 geared approximately 2:1 using an Mtroniks 15amp esc. Battery is a Nimh 7.2v pack made up for the job. The hull at this size weighs in at about 15lb.
She looks very nice on the water and has attracted quite a few favourable comments, especially from modellers of a certain age (of which I am one) who may remember the original.
As the motor was very noisy it has been replaced with a belt and pulley drive using turned brass pulleys and an O ring belt. This is now very quiet. The reduction was about 3:1.
